Global Warming Articles : Fundamental Ways that could Stop Global Warming   by Jean Simmer

What do you think could come in as more important to our basic human needs such as food, shelter, medicine, education or even the need for affection? There could be one issue that would predetermine everything that will transpire on the planet, and that is the planet’s condition. If the world were on the brink of destruction, saving it would be the priority of every single individual. And save it we must. Although the threat is still not at a life and death level, there is an alarming truth that there are several problems that are now bugging the place that we live in. Say hello to global warming. And try to say bye – stop global warming!

Global warming, which is also known as the greenhouse effect, has been here long before you or anybody else out there existed. It’s been here for thousands of years. And through those thousands of years, the earth’s temperature has increased, and so has the effects of global warming. Time magazine has actually coined this problem as a planetary emergency.

There are major solutions that have been done worldwide to cope, alleviate or altogether stop the effects of this major problem. But among these choices, the obvious choice that the human race is supposed to concentrate on is how to stop global warming. Since we have all contributed to the occurrence of global warming (in our own little ways), then we should also join forces in combating this dilemma.

    1. Join organizations that promise to educate you about the effects of global warming and what you can do to put a stop to this problem. Be an activist on this matter. After all, everything begins with you.

    2. The next step is to conserve energy. And yes, there are so many ways that an individual can save energy. Let’s list some here: car pooling, turning off appliances that are not in use; unplugging any electronic devices that are not in use; buying energy-efficient lamps; keeping the filters of your air-conditioning unit clean; taking a walk (instead of driving); turn off the faucet when enough water has been consumed; do not use appliances or products that release chlorofluorocarbons into the atmosphere (examples are hairsprays and refrigerators that have CFCs); use EEF appliances; start planting trees, etc. These are basic things that we have learned even from grade school and yet, tend to forget the most.

    3. If you are a slave of your profession, then, cut on those work hours to help save energy. For every individual that would cut down an hour from his work, there would be millions worth of energy saved. Learn to maximize your time and to properly manage it. I guess you never imagined before that this could also stop global warming, huh?

    4. Recycle. Need we elaborate on that?

    5. Use environment-friendly fuels and vehicles. They may be a little bit more expensive but they do not contribute to pollution. Honda was the first to come up with a vehicle that is cell-powered, thus, there are no harmful emissions. If you cannot afford cell-powered vehicles just yet, you can opt for those that can run thirty miles in just a gallon of fuel. This way, carbon monoxide is greatly reduced.

    6. If you can, harness the power of the sun, wind and water to generate electricity. There are equipments in the market that can be used to harness solar, wind or geothermal energy. These sources of energy are clean and reusable. If, again, you can’t afford to tap on the power of these sources, then, at least, choose an electric provider that does not pollute the environment by the use of fossil fuels.

    7. Insulate your home to prevent excessive use of heaters. During summer, dress lightly to minimize the use of air-conditioning units.

Most people would argue that these, altogether, would not stop global warming. Well, maybe for now that is true. But with the collective efforts of each and everyone in the planet, and if everyone would be disciplined enough to care for environmental issues such as this, then even two degrees off the present global temperature would be such a major feat. The most important thing is for all of us to do something, as you have noticed, we only have one planet to save. Beyond this, there are no second chances.

Is Global Warming Real?   by James Heimler

Do you believe in aliens? That life from another planet far away came to Earth to begin life anew. For some this is an explanation of global warming. Beings from another world found themselves faced with the global catastrophe of global warming and their environment began to fail. They packed their bags and traveled to our planet. Is this fact or is it fiction? No one knows for sure. The global warming debate is present in our news and media but whether or not it has something to do with planet-traveling aliens may be something for the Sci-Fi Channel. It is all around us. It is on the weather stations. It faces us when we decide to purchase a new car or even a cleaning product. The real issues come when trying to learn about global warming. There is a lot of conflicting information on the internet and there is not one group that can agree on all aspects of the global warming debate.

Over the past century, with out a doubt, global temperatures have risen. While the rise in temperature has been only a degree or so, the concern is whether the Earth’s temperatures will continue to rise and what impact that will have on the environment. The controversy about the warming of the earth is a result of conflicting evidence.

The fact that global warming also occurred in the prehistoric era is a scientific point. Some think a large meteor hitting the planet caused an big change in the earth’s temperature. Is that what killed the dinosaurs? Science cannot prove this conclusively yet. The political and industrial lobbies further complicate conversations about global warming. The contention of these groups is that, we currently do not know enough about the effects of global warming to limit industrial emissions.

The facts about global warming differ according to which group is publishing the information. Unfortunately this translates into a myriad of confusing ideas and theories that the average citizen must muck through in order to determine the truth. Scientists continue to perform studies and monitor global temperatures but until there is a published analysis of the results that is completely definitive, then there will be doubt.

Global Warming and Home Information Packs (HIPs)   by Dermot A Fennell

Is Global warming a real threat and a problem locally? Are energy saving home initiatives worth while?

I have been working with Flintshire County Council for the past 10/11 years, and have seen many instances of the devastation caused by unstable weather and flash flooding. This prompted me to extend my knowledge and continue my professional development (CPD) in the field of domestic energy use and performance, through home inspection reporting. Although at the time my employers did not see the relevance of my CPD in relation to my role as a Chartered Surveyor. I pushed on at my own expense regardless. Through home Inspection and energy reporting many issues have been raised.

In my opinion there are significant implications for residents and home owners affected by unstable weather conditions.

I currently reside in Buckley, Flintshire, which has the advantage of being well above sea level and generally with lower relevant water table levels, therefore at little risk of flooding. Many other residents of Flintshire are not as fortunate and will be well aware of the consequences of flash flooding. A few years back there was devastation caused when Mold and coastal areas were temporarily sent to the blue depths. This was seen as a freak of nature and not a reoccurring problem. However, Central England is one of the current victims. Victims may have been lucky enough to be covered by insurance, and consider the issues past tense.

However, I feel this leaves a number of questions to be answered:-

    1. What about after flooding subsides, what happens to the areas that were affected? Does life go back to normal or is the area blighted? 2. What of property insurance renewal? Have insurance companies renewed policies without winging, have they refused renewal or increased renewal premiums? 3. If you owned a property within a flooded area, and now wish move on or to sell your property? Will purchasers shy away because of the potential of future flooding? Are you now “stuck in the mud” and unable to move on to new pastures? 4. Will investment into the affected areas be reduced due to general blighting? 5. Is increasingly unstable weather patterns an issue we need to be concerned about? 6. What is being done and what needs or can to be done to remove the effects of blight and hopefully reduce the possibility of reoccurrence? 7. Do you think we should take a chance and ignore global warming? What about our children and grand children’s futures? 8. What strategy does the local council have in place to ensure the welfare of local residents?

But, to consider my concerns locally. I now work with a local company home inspections Chester, www.homeinspectionschester.co.uk and have been inadvertently offering free advice in respect of energy use in my personal effort to assist in the reduction of Carbon monoxide (Co2) emissions in to the atmosphere. I have seen evidence that a professionally produced home energy use report can assist in reducing Co2 emissions dramatically. Last week I visited a local property to review the energy ratings. This property was a detached house constructed during the 1960s. I completed an “energy performance report” using government approved standard assessment procedures, and determined that the owners annual energy use was 383 KWh/m2 this equated to 6.3 Tonnes of co2 gases being released into the atmosphere, with an average fuel cost to the owner of £1650. I made simple recommendations, which were subsequently carried out at no cost to the property owner, through the assistance of grant aid. As a test I carried out revised calculations. The revised calculations confirmed a reduction in Co2 emissions of 3.6 Tonnes per annum, and a saving of £396 per annum in fuel costs.

I think I am doing my bit.

    Regards Dermot

    Global warming basics   by www.beTurtle.com

Is It Happening?Global warming, yeah, it’s happening. Right now as a matter of fact. The evidence is everywhere, even in your backyard. Climatologists note that significant changes have been occurring in the earth’s atmosphere and their records show that:

    * The Earth’s average temperature is steadily increasing, up 1.4 degrees Fahrenheit since 1880, the beginning of the Industrial Revolution

    * There is a 20 percent decrease in summer Arctic ice since the 1970’s.

    * Over the last 40 years, it’s reported that over 22 percent of Antarctic ice has melted.

    * Extreme weather, including hurricanes and drought, has increased throughout the last century.

    * Snow has fallen later and melted sooner…yes, in your own backyard.

    Is It Serious?

If you think that a sea level rise of up to 20 feet isn’t serious because it won’t happen in your lifetime, then you’re seriously mistaken. At the current rates of global warming and carbon output, Antarctica’s Western Ice Shelf will slip into the oceans raising sea levels and causing a landslide of events affecting the world that include flooding, drought and famine.

    Consequences of Not Acting?

Any one reason to act far outweighs any fifty reasons not to. But even after the evidence above, if there are those who still deny, deny, deny…well, then let’s all just put our bathing suits on and hope there’s enough food around to feed your fan waver because it’s going to get toasty.

    Some consequences of not acting:

    * NASA projects the first ice-free summer by 2040, and a completely ice-free North Pole by 2100.

    * Massive hurricanes many times stronger than 2005’s Katrina may occur.

    * Heat waves have already killed 700 Chicagoans in 1995 and up to 50,000 Europeans during the summer of 2003, and they are sure to continue.

    * Droughts will become commonplace, such as the current one in The Sahel in southern Africa right now.

    * Rainfall will continue to increase in other areas, as has been already witnessed in Scotland in 2000 and India in 2004.

    * 2.8 billion people now live under the poverty level – that is, under $2 USD per day. These people account for half of the world’s population and most of them live in low-lying areas extremely vulnerable to flooding and with rising sea levels, they will be the first to feel the tragic effects of global warming on a large scale.

    Can We Stop It?

Oh if global warming were like a light where we can just flip the switch at will, but unfortunately it’s not. But there are many things we can do, including reducing our contribution to the warming of the earth’s atmosphere and oceans by seeking cleaner and more efficient fuel sources, reducing energy consumption per person and better educating the public about the importance of environmental responsibility.
