IPBAIPBA 2010 Conference Theme – “Climate Change and Legal Practice”

For the 2010 IPBA Conference in Singapore, the Organising Committee has picked “Climate Change and Legal Practice” as the Conference Theme. Climate Change, in the form of global warming, is one of the most serious challenges, if not the most serious challenge, that the world will face in the 21st century. It will significantly change the way business is done and will create both new challenges as well as new opportunities in many areas of legal practice.

Apart from global warming, Climate Change is also taking place in other spheres. With the economic depression brought about since late 2008 by imprudent banking practices, many Governments have vowed not just to shore up their economies but also to prevent a repeat of this economic disaster in future. Banking laws and regulations are therefore expected to undergo a huge climate change of their own.

Besides banking, the world of computing and information technology is also undergoing its own climate change with the introduction of Web 2.0 applications and Cloud Computing platforms. As it becomes easier and more efficient for data and applications to be stored on remote servers, legal issues such as personal privacy, data security and electronic discovery will have to be dealt with.

“Climate Change and Legal Practice” is a theme which is both current and broad enough to encompass many of the discussion sessions that will take place during the Conference.
