Conference on the Occasion of the 200th Anniversary of the Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin
21 – 23 April 2010The Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin – the Modern Original
In response to the new social, political, economic and scientific challenges of the early 19th century, the University of Berlin was founded on the basis of ideas put forward by the brothers Wilhelm and Alexander von Humboldt and other radical thinkers, combining research and education in the same institution. Furthermore, Alexander von Humboldt can be considered to be one of the co-founders of modern climatology. In this context the congress “Continents under Climate Change” was planned as a special event of the Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin on its 200th anniversary.
The conference is organised in close co-operation with the Potsdam-Institute for Climate Impact Research (PIK) and the German Academy of Science Leopoldina.About the Congress
Climate change is one of the most urgent problems and a huge challenge for mankind. In its tradition to be the “modern classic” the Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin will host an international scientific congress on the consequences of climate change on a continental scale. The Alma Mater Berolinensis will offer a platform to discuss the state of knowledge of climate change and its risks for nature and humans. Contributions from natural sciences are expected to provide information about the internal mechanisms of the climate system. However, the congress aims to identify and synthesise the socio-economic and political impacts of climate change as well.
The aim of the congress is to strengthen the awareness of the impacts on different natural environments and socio-economic systems. In the best tradition of the Humboldt brothers the scientific results of climate impact research have to be transferred to society. So, the congress is destinated to scientists, decision makers, students and the interested public. At the beginning of the post-Kyoto-process the congress should be a reminder of the overall importance of climate change.Important Dates
