Global Warming 2020

Punch 2 – the weather patterns are so severely changed that very large areas will be covered by clouds that are heavy with moisture, these large areas of cloud cover will be reflecting sunlight back into space and thus allowing less collection of heat. As this cooling takes place the moisture collected in the clouds begins to return to earth in the form of rain and snow, this compounds the cooling effect and by the time the planet has cooled enough to reduce the cloud cover, to allow more heat collection, the planet surface is covered with a large area of white snow and ice reflecting the warming sunlight back into space. This is the new beginning of an Ice Age and not survivable.

Ahhhh I hear you saying but this will not happen soon, it would take a long time for this to happen and by then we will have developed a solution. You are dead wrong, 90% of our carbon emissions have taken place since 1945 and we have only used half of the fuel supply and finding more every day. If you turn on the TV news almost every day there has been an event related to the affects of Global Warming. The warning signs are clearly present and they are increasing yearly. If we continue to use the rest of the fossil fuel supply our planet will be beyond the point of stopping the new Ice Age. At the current rate of consumption that is estimated to be in 50 years time. You could still be alive to watch this event and most certainly your children will be, but the sad part is the story can never be told to generations afterward because there will be none.

We are quickly approaching the edge of a non-stoppable event. But we do have solutions to dramatically slow the Effects of Global Warming giving us more time to completely stop exhausting the greenhouse gases. Ohh yes we will pay a price; punch 1 as described above is coming and non-stoppable but how hard that punch is depends on if we start now to reduce the greenhouse gases, the longer we wait the harder the punch. While there are certainly natural causes of global warming that certainly is not where the situation stops. Many people will venture to say that the main cause of global warming is actually humans and their actions against the environment. There are a lot of things to consider though as there may still be a lot of issues and causes out there that we do not yet know about which could be working along with the natural causes of global warming. Only time and research will tell though and that is why the science community is actively working on finding out everything they can.

The thing about global warming is that not enough people really understand everything there is to currently know about the situation. Not only are our children in the dark but a lot of adults are too. This is simply unacceptable as there is no reason that we do not all know about the natural causes of global warming along with the un-natural causes and what it is doing to our environment. In order to make sure that this does not become a pattern that continues on for many years, it is important that we take action to make sure that everyone, young and old alike, learn more about this dangerous issue.

Schools Need To Step Up

While some schools out there touch a little bit on the subject of natural causes of global warming and the un-natural causes, they could certainly stand to do a little more. There is nothing wrong with extensive education on this subject as there are only good things to gain from it. Our children are our future and it will be up to them to help make sure that things with our planet remain safe and in tact. Since this is a fact that cannot be disputed, it is a shame that more and more schools are not stepping up and doing more to educate our future leaders.

If your locals schools are not doing enough to educate the children on the natural causes of global warming then you could certainly step up and teach your children what you feel would be beneficial for them to know. Even if your school is doing their part, as the parent it is up to you to reinforce the education that they are receiving on the natural causes of global warming. Take everything that you can find on the subject and make sure that you are passing it on to your children so that they too can benefit from it.

Many people believe that global warming is caused solely by the human beings that are on the planet. It may be surprising to know that global warming is also a naturally occurring event. It can easily be argued that whatever global warming occurs naturally on the planet is a fraction of what humans are capable of contributing.

The human causes of global warming have been occurring for many years. The various methods in which humans contribute to global warming include everything from driving cars to simply breathing. Natural causes of global warming can be on a much larger scale that could be from sources outside of our planet. Whether the cause is natural or human, global warming is a serious problem that everyone should be aware of.

Different Natural Causes Of Global Warming

One natural cause of global warming involves the sun. Overtime explosions are generated on the surface of the sun and the impact is felt all the way back on Earth. The impact comes in the form of higher temperatures which directly affect global warming. These eruptions occur quite normally on the sun and the planet can be regularly subjected to the increased temperatures that result.

As both the Sun and the Earth orbit there are certain times that the two come closer to one another. When this happens it is normal to see an increase in temperatures on the planet. This is a great example of a natural cause of global warming. There is nothing we can actually do to prevent this from happening as it is part of the natural course of the universe.

Earth has numerous volcanoes that litter its surface. Some actively are erupting while many others sit dormant waiting for their next opportunity to unleash their fury. When these volcanoes do erupt they send numerous gases, ash, and smoke into the atmosphere of the planet. As this happens the temperatures will slowly decrease. This is because the sunlight that would typically shine in the area is shielded by the smoke released by the volcano. Once the effects of the volcano have subsided the planet will naturally warm itself back up.

Any change that might occur in the planets ocean currents can effect global warming as well. It is thought that these changes in the current can be influenced by the sun. Depending on the location and the degree of the change in the ocean current, temperatures can increase dramatically which contributes to global warming.

Knowing why we are in this fix is the first step to doing something about it. Yes, that’s you and me.

There are four levels at which to understand the cause of global warming.

* The mechanics of global warming

* What we do

* Our beliefs and values, and

* Natural cycles, involving the sun

The mechanics of global warming are simple. There’s too much carbon dioxide (CO2) in the atmosphere.

The Earth absorbs heat from the sun and radiates much of it back into space or else we would cook. But presently the Earth retains more warmth from the sun, about 0.85 per square metre, than it radiates back into space. It is mainly CO2 that hinders solar radiation back into space and this creates the greenhouse effect.

Currently the atmospheric CO2 content is about 380 ppm (parts per million), up from about a thousand years ago at a level of 280 ppm. Predictions are that it may go up to 500ppm by the end of this century.

And CO2 hangs around for a long time. It takes about 100,000 years for atmospheric CO2 to reduce by about 63% through natural processes.

What we do contributes to so much CO2 in the atmosphere. It got there because of massive amounts of fossil fuels that humanity has been burning since the start of the Industrial Revolution, some 300 years ago.

Coal and oil are the mainstays in power generation and to power our transport. Of course a growing world population needs more energy for food, clothing, housing and comforts. But when there are 8 billion of us, all wanting a big house, the latest electronic playthings, a car, and access to world travel, we’re in trouble.

We’re in trouble because the Earth cannot physically support all those needs and wants and because the energy emissions needed to meet them would choke us.

Our beliefs and values have much to do with why we want so many more things than we really need.

It is to do with ideas about “progress” that started before the Industrial Revolution, during the period known as the “Enlightenment”, starting in the 16th century.

It generated ideas about the importance of the individual, about the use of reason and material wellbeing. Rene Descartes was one of this period’s foremost philosophers. You know his famous quote: “I think therefore I am.” Recently I saw an advertisement using that quote like this: “I think, therefore I shop”.

Funny? Yes, and getting to the heart of the problem. The way we think, about ourselves and about the world is the problem.

Does our consumer world leave room for nature, for things we can make and maintain ourselves, for “slow” and natural growth, for each other and our environments? Not much.

So, it’s our values and our beliefs that continues to put CO2 in the air and are cooking us.

Natural cycles, involving the sun have something to do with global warming too. That’s true.

The Earth is now receiving 30% more solar radiation than it did 4.6 billion years ago. And there have always been cycles of ice ages and warmer “interglacial” periods, depending on the Earth’s orbit, solar radiation strength and changes in ocean currents.

The last “Little Ice Age” was between 1400 and 1840 with significantly lower temperatures. And such events are part of 1,500 year cycles.

Presently the Earth is at the end of an interglacial, warmer time and is due for a cooling down. But it seems that we are not going to let that happen. The steep increase in CO2, particularly over the last 45 years, does not fit into any natural cycle.

We cannot blame the sun. It’s us.

What to do is the question. The facts are that global warming will be with us for a long time, whether we stop putting CO2 into the air today or not. It will get worse as fast developing economies involving billions of people in the USA, China and India will rely on fossil fuels for decades yet. Renewable energy is only at the start of making any inroads.

You can only change what you do by changing how you think. If we don’t figure our way out of our consumerist addictions we will eventually have to go cold turkey. Or is that hot turkey?

There is a need for re-valuation of living well with an interdependent, connected and unpredictable world. One with limits.

What better way to change your thinking than by getting close to people who do live – and some do so very well – with high levels of vulnerability and dependence, like people with disabilities or those who are frail aged.

Giving a hand to those who live in your street or come on your path, is a way to get reconnected with what life is all about.

Whether or not alternate energy sources will be used in time to make global warming tolerable, getting on with each other, in all our diversity, is good for planet Earth.
